Hand painted and stencilled terracotta surfaces for floors and walls, where pattern is applied directly onto clay to create soft, lived-in decoration with real craft character.
De Ferranti’s Painted Clay Series brings colour and pattern to terracotta in the most direct way: pigment and glaze worked onto the surface by hand. Designs range from simple stencilled repeats and border motifs to more expressive painted fields, allowing terracotta to function not only as a ground material, but as the decorative language of a space.
Two approaches are available. Natural pigments can be painted or stencilled onto the clay to achieve a breathable, faded finish with a chalky softness, ideal where a timeworn, historical feel is desired. Alternatively, patterns can be painted using glazes and then fired, creating a more durable, colour-fast surface with subtle depth and lustre, suited to higher-wear environments and bolder decorative statements.
Suitable for both floors and walls, Painted Clay works beautifully in kitchens, entrance halls, stair halls, garden rooms and bathrooms, as well as in framed “carpet” layouts where a patterned centre is bordered by plain field tiles. Pattern scale, colour palette and layout can be adapted to suit project requirements, from restrained geometry to more ornamental compositions.
