Neisha Crosland
Young Pen crackled amber – yellow grout
Richly layered and visually complex, this Young Pen shell evokes the warmth and depth of antique tortoiseshell - without compromise. The surface moves through tones of burnt , caramel, honey gold and deep umber, punctuated by natural charcoal speckling and translucent patches that glow when they catch the light.

Each shell fragment is sliced in a “crazy cut” formation, then gently crackled to enhance its organic texture. The glossy ground finish intensifies the depth of colour, while the yellow grout subtly warms the composition, blending rather than sharply dividing the pieces. The result is a surface that feels almost liquid in places, with darker blooms appearing suspended beneath the polished layer.

A recycled by-product of the food industry, Young Pen shell offers a far more responsible alternative to traditional tortoiseshell aesthetics. The material’s natural iridescence and unpredictable markings ensure that no two panels are ever identical.
