Neisha Crosland
Violet Oyster – Rough Crackled with Natural Grout
This Violet Oyster composition reads almost like a fractured landscape – angular, faceted and richly layered in tone. Each shell is sliced into irregular, “crazy cut” fragments and deliberately crackled, then carefully inlaid by hand onto a substrate. The glossy grind finish enhances the depth of the material, allowing the natural to reveal its shifting spectrum of deep aubergine, smoky charcoal, espresso brown and flashes of silvery pearl.

The natural grout sits quietly between the shards, softening the geometry while allowing the individual pieces to retain their sharp, cubist-like energy. The reference to abstract Cubism is evident – planes intersect, overlap and refract light differently across the surface, creating movement and visual tension.

Look closely and the organic origin remains visible: subtle shell growth lines, clouds and tonal veining shimmer beneath the polished surface. The effect is both raw and refined – fractured yet luxurious.
