Neisha Crosland
Monochrome Incised Vase
This monochrome vase is a study in contrast, proportion and disciplined ornament. Its deep black body – polished to a piano-like gloss – is incised with repeated ivory-toned motifs that encircle the form in rhythmic bands. Rather than being applied or inlaid, the leaf-like details are carved into the surface itself, creating a subtle relief that catches light along the edges of each incision. The decoration feels integral to the form, not layered upon it.

The silhouette recalls classical amphora shapes, with twin handles rising from the shoulder and a flared neck that balances the generous curvature of the body. A stepped base grounds the piece with architectural authority.

Executed in a restrained palette of black and ivory, the vase demonstrates how richness can emerge from texture and line alone. The interplay between high gloss and carved matte detail, smooth curvature and crisp incision, gives the surface a quiet but deliberate drama.

It is an object defined not by excess, but by control – sculpted, incised and resolved with precision, perfectly at home within the Objects and Artifacts collection.
