This tile draws directly from the celebrated azulejo panels of the Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira in Lisbon, one of the most important surviving ensembles of 17th-century Portuguese decorative tilework. The original panels were created by the Amsterdam workshops of Jan van Oort and Willem van der Kloet, whose blue-and-white narrative scenes profoundly influenced Portuguese azulejo tradition.

Here, a whimsical feline figure – poised mid-stride with prey beneath its paw – is rendered in a restrained palette of soft manganese browns, olive greens, muted black and warm ivory. The brushwork is lively yet disciplined: delicate line drawing defines the musculature and expression, while loose washes create subtle tonal modelling across the body and landscape. The surrounding foliage is outlined in confident dark strokes, with glazed greens and ochres adding quiet depth.

The glaze has a characteristic tin-white ground with a softly crackled surface, lending authenticity and historical resonance. Slight tonal shifts and painterly variations are not imperfections but hallmarks of true hand-painted azulejo craft.

Part of De Ferranti’s Portuguese Handpainted Tiles Collection, these pieces may be commissioned as individual narrative tiles, repeating panels or large-scale mural compositions, faithfully echoing the spirit of Fronteira while adapted to contemporary architectural settings.
