In the time of Thibaut IV, the great fairs of the Champagne region became a cradle of decorative arts that spread throughout Christendom. Drawing on alluvial clay deposits used through the ages, craftsmen developed high-aesthetic tiles to adorn cathedrals and noble homes, using a technique that resembled engraving.
The imagery replicated the medieval world: bestiary motifs from farm and forest, heraldic symbols, natural vines, and geometric elements designed to assemble into larger patterns. This tile features a stylised barrel motif, rendered in deep contrast on a warm, aged ground, with gentle edge variation that signals true handcraft.
De Ferranti has also developed a marbled tile inspired by this period, offering a contemporary variation with the same historic soul.
