For a Greek Orthodox church in Folegandros, Greece, De Ferranti delivered a turnkey commission for the design and installation of a traditional icon scheme, centred around an iconostasis-style screen. Set within a white vaulted arch, the work combines sacred imagery, hand-painted timber surfaces and gilded detailing to create a powerful focal point for worship.

The installation is formed as an iconostasis-like timber screen with a large arched opening and inner double doors, constructed in dark, time-worn wood tones that evoke age, patina and permanence. Dominating the composition are two principal icon panels: the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child to the left, and a haloed saint or Christ figure to the right, both rendered in a traditional Orthodox style with solemn, frontal presence.

Gold detailing is used throughout to animate the piece in changing light. Beyond the halos, gilding appears as trim, corner accents and small roundels, creating points of warmth and reverence across the surface. The timber field itself is richly worked, with layered painted bands and ornamental motifs that bring depth and movement behind the figures, rather than leaving the background flat.

Behind the central arch, smaller double doors are detailed with delicate decorative motifs, adding a quieter, jewel-like intricacy within the larger architectural gesture. Framed by the church’s white plaster vaulting, the contrast between bright enclosure and dark gilded woodwork heightens the sense of ceremony and focus.

This Folegandros project reflects De Ferranti’s ability to deliver complete, site-specific sacred interior commissions, where design, fabrication, art and installation must align seamlessly with the traditions of the Greek Orthodox church.
