This black lip crackle uses a dark Black Lip Mother of Pearl field made from crazy-cut shell fragments, crackled and set into black grout. The result is a surface that reads differently in daylight, ambient light and directional artificial light, an important consideration when specifying shell.
The shell pieces are inlaid onto a substrate with adhesive and ground to a glossy finish. The irregular geometry has an abstract, Cubist-like character, while the black grout reduces contrast between the fragment edges. In this black lip crackle, the making method and the visual effect are closely connected. The geometry organises the material, while the shell itself supplies the changing highlights, darker bands and quieter areas. A representative sample is therefore more informative than a single colour reference when matching the surface to stone, metal, timber or painted joinery.
Compare Tahiti Black Lip squares with black grout, Tahiti Black Lip squares with black grout – Diagonal and Cracklé Black Shell for related approaches to colour, scale or pattern. The wider Shells & Mother of Pearl collection places this design beside butt-jointed grids, crackled surfaces, relief work and inlay, useful when narrowing reflectivity and pattern for a scheme.
Available sizes are listed from 10 x 10 cm to 100 x 100 cm. Tiles are 7 mm thick and wall panels can range from 7 to 19 mm depending on application. Confirm panel edges and grout tone using a physical sample. For specification, consider viewing distance as well as close detail: shell can read as a broad tonal field from across a room and as intricate material at arm’s length. Confirm substrate, fixing, jointing and maintenance for the exact setting, and use representative samples to agree acceptable tonal movement before ordering the full quantity.
