Petrified wood log

This petrified wood log can be used as a plinth, a sculptural object or a side table, bringing the preserved structure of timber into an interior in mineral form. De Ferranti also offers petrified wood in slab form for table tops, vanity tops and furniture. The visible log retains the irregular cylindrical character, growth structure and textural changes associated with wood, yet its surface has the density and mineral character of stone. Cream, grey, beige and brown tonal variations move through the piece, with fissures and uneven edges contributing to its natural appearance rather than being treated as uniform decoration.

Petrified Wood Log as Geological Object

Petrified wood forms when buried timber becomes mineralised over long periods, with minerals carried through the original cellular structure and preserving much of the grain and growth pattern in stone. This process explains why a petrified wood log can be read simultaneously as botanical remnant and geological material. No two pieces should be expected to match exactly in colour, fissuring, form or mineral pattern.

For a related application of the same material, De Ferranti’s Petrified Wood Tabletop shows how petrified wood can move from found-looking object to functional furniture surface. The wider Objects of Desire & Curiosities collection places the log among other material-led pieces selected for close viewing and distinctive surface character.

Placement and Specification

As a plinth, side table or display object, support, stability, weight and final dimensions should be reviewed for the individual piece. A simple surrounding palette allows the preserved grain and mineral variation to remain the focus. For slab applications, selection should consider the intended furniture format and the specific colour and pattern of the available material.
