Occhio di Pavone
Occhio di Pavone, meaning “peacock eye” in Italian, is a rare historic fossil marble or lumachella prized for its distinctive circular shell markings, which resemble the eyes of a peacock’s tail. Known in historic stone literature as marmor ocellatum and associated in some ancient varieties with marmor triponticum, this extraordinary decorative stone was used in antiquity and is closely linked with Roman taste for rare coloured marbles and shell-rich ornamental limestones. The most celebrated ancient examples are connected with the Kutluca and Izmit region of Turkey, where Late Cretaceous fossiliferous limestones contain rudist bivalves, forams and other bioclasts, creating the rounded “eye” formations that give the marble its name. Historic collections record several variations, including red, black, grey, rose, white and pavonazzo tones, each valued for its rarity, polish and archaeological character.

With its fossil patterning, ancient Mediterranean provenance and strong decorative identity, Occhio di Pavone is especially suited to luxury interiors, statement panels, bathrooms, fireplace surrounds, furniture, decorative slabs and projects where rare marbles, historic provenance and natural ornament are essential.
