Chemtou – Giallo Antico / Giallo Numidia

Chemtou Giallo Antico, also known as Giallo Numidia, reveals immediately why this rare historic marble became one of the great coloured stones of antiquity. Its warm spectrum moves from golden saffron to peach and amber, crossed by rust veining and occasional ivory infusions that can appear suspended within the surface.

Quarried at Chemtou in present-day Tunisia, within ancient Numidia, the stone was known to the Romans as Giallo Antico. Numidian and later Roman quarrying supplied material for prestigious building programmes across the Mediterranean. Its characteristic golden colour can also carry rose, red and green markings, giving individual pieces far greater complexity than the simple description “yellow marble” suggests.

The material’s depth, density of colour and historic association make it suitable for carefully considered interiors, including panels, fireplace surrounds, furniture, tabletops, flooring and decorative stonework where a rare antique marble is intended to act as a focal material.

Chemtou Giallo Antico and Roman Colour

The closely related polychromatic vein-cut Chemtou reveals a more strongly directional expression of the same stone. De Ferranti also uses this material in the Chemtou Mosaic & Marble Composition and the Giallo Numidia Chevron Pavement, showing how historic marble can move from slab selection into patterned work.

Selecting Historic Chemtou

Colour and mineral markings vary substantially between surviving pieces. Before cutting, review the available material for saffron tone, rust veining, pale calcite areas and the scale of natural fissures. Where several pieces meet, dry layout allows the strongest colour transitions to be balanced rather than interrupted. This is especially useful when pale ivory areas need to be distributed across a floor or paired wall panels.
