Brecha da Arrábida
Breccia Arabida, also known as Brecha da Arrábida, is one of Portugal’s rarest and most historically important ornamental stones. Quarried in the Serra da Arrábida near Setúbal, this extraordinary material has the visual richness of an antique marble, with fragments of red, ochre, cream, grey and deeper mineral tones suspended within a warm natural matrix. Its pattern is not simply veining, but geological drama: a broken, recomposed surface that feels almost architectural before it is even cut.

Although often referred to as a marble in decorative stone language, Breccia Arabida is more precisely an ancient conglomerate breccia. This distinction gives it much of its character. It is a stone formed through rupture, pressure, movement and time, which explains why each slab has the feeling of a natural mosaic. For interiors that require depth, provenance and rare material intelligence, it offers something far beyond a conventional luxury marble.

Its historic use reaches back around two thousand years to the Roman presence in the Setúbal region. Later, Brecha da Arrábida became closely associated with Portuguese Manueline architecture, before finding renewed expression in Baroque interiors, where its colour and polish could be protected and fully appreciated. Important public and historic works include the Monastery of Jesus in Setúbal, the Fortress of São Filipe, Casa do Corpo Santo, the Convent of Christ, the Cathedral of Funchal, Pena Palace in Sintra and other architectural examples in Portugal, Europe and Brazil.

Today, Breccia Arabida is especially precious because the original quarries closed after the creation of the Arrábida Natural Park. It is now considered an extinct georesource, making available material increasingly limited and significant.

At De Ferranti, we see Breccia Arabida as a collector’s marble for interiors where rarity, history and visual presence are essential. It is particularly suited to statement panels, fireplace surrounds, vanity tops, bathrooms, decorative stonework, furniture pieces and carefully composed architectural details.
