Its delicately aged ground and tile body ensure that no two pieces are identical. De Ferranti records the pattern as Sicilian in origin and 18th century in character, arranged as a four-tile repeat.

The black field gives the pale decoration clarity and depth, while controlled ageing softens what might otherwise be a severe monochrome contrast. Across four tiles, foliate and geometric elements meet to create a larger symmetrical composition.
