Delft cloud marble tiles have traditionally been produced in the intimate 13 x 13 cm format, a proportion that became standard in 17th century Dutch interiors and remains iconic to this day. From merchant houses along the canals of Amsterdam to fireplaces and kitchens across Europe, these small square tiles formed rhythmic, modular fields of pattern and story.

This design moves away from figurative scenes and instead embraces an abstract, marbled composition. Soft ivory tin glaze forms the ground, while delicate cobalt veining blooms across the surface in fluid, cloud-like formations. The blue drifts and pools at the edges of each shape, creating a natural feathering that feels almost like ink suspended in milk.

The palette is restrained yet luminous: warm cream offset by atmospheric blue-grey. The finish has a quiet depth, with subtle tonal variation created during firing, ensuring that no two tiles are ever exactly alike. When laid in repetition, the pattern forms a continuous flowing field, reminiscent of sky, water, or antique paper marbling.

Each tile is hand-glazed and kiln-fired at high temperature, honouring Delft’s long ceramic tradition while presenting a more contemporary, abstract interpretation of its historic tin-glazed heritage.

Designing with Delft Cloud Marble Tiles

The pattern has no fixed figurative centre, allowing the tiles to form an expansive field rather than a sequence of isolated motifs. Across a larger installation, the cobalt tracery changes naturally from tile to tile while the warm ivory ground provides visual continuity. The result can feel softly clouded, mineral or water-like depending on the scale, grout colour and surrounding materials.
