Sintra Collection – Pátio de Diana Vine Azulejo
Inspired by the azulejos of the Pátio de Diana at the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, the Sintra Collection - Pátio de Diana Vine Azulejo draws from one of the great Hispano-Moresque tile traditions of early 16th-century Portugal.
This relief tile design is based on the vine and grape motifs found in Diana’s Courtyard at the National Palace of Sintra. The original tiles combine a raised vine leaf, twisting tendril and clusters of grapes, forming a richly textured surface where botanical ornament becomes architectural rhythm.
Thought to be connected to Sevillian production around the early 1500s, these azulejos reflect the Hispano-Moresque and Mudéjar inheritance that shaped Portuguese palace interiors during the reign of King Manuel I. Comparable Sintra tiles were commissioned in 1508-1509 from Sevillian ceramic workshops, giving this design a strong historical link to the ceramic trade between Seville and Portugal.
Reinterpreted as a contemporary Portuguese tile, the design offers a beautiful aged palette of green, ochre, cream, amber and brown glaze. The relief surface catches light unevenly, creating the impression of age, movement and hand-formed clay.
Ideal for decorative wall panels, bathrooms, garden rooms, courtyards, fireplaces and heritage-led interiors, this tile brings the atmosphere of Sintra’s royal architecture into a modern project without losing its antique soul.
