The Pennello black terracotta tile is entirely handmade, with irregular black brushstrokes creating tonal movement across a rugged clay surface. Inspired by the textural landscape of Mount Etna in Sicily, it is conceived as a field tile rather than a printed repeat. Slightly uneven edges and variations within the dark finish are central to its material character.

Volcanic Character in the Pennello Black Terracotta Tile

Black pigment is brushed across the terracotta rather than applied as a perfectly uniform industrial glaze. As a result, the surface can shift between dense charcoal, softened black and warmer areas where the clay influences the colour. The tactile edge and visible brush direction give large areas depth while retaining the simplicity of a single-colour field.

Within the Pennello family, Pennello Cream provides a pale mineral counterpart, while Pennello Washed Denim Blue introduces a cooler river-inspired tone. Elsewhere at De Ferranti, Tierra Negra Quadrado offers another black handmade terracotta surface with a distinctly dry character, and Delft Noir H01 provides a contrasting gloss-black ceramic option.

Dark Handmade Tile for Floors and Walls

Pennello Black can ground polychrome patterned tiles, frame a decorative panel or form a complete monochrome surface. It works particularly well beside pale stone, timber, aged metal and lime plaster. The source material supports use on interior floors and walls, including bathrooms and wet rooms, with warm-climate exterior use subject to project specification. Samples should be reviewed to understand the expected tonal range and rugged edge before quantities are finalised.
