Bone Horn Chequer Tiles with Graphic Contrast

These bone horn chequer tiles use one of the most enduring decorative layouts: the black and pale chequerboard. In this version, the familiar pattern is reworked through natural bone and horn veneer, giving the surface a more intimate, hand-finished quality than a standard ceramic, stone or marble chequer.

The composition is crisp from a distance, but close up the material reveals subtle irregularity. The pale bone carries gentle tonal variation, while the dark horn introduces depth, polish and occasional natural markings. This gives Chequer in Bone & Horn a graphic structure without making it feel flat or machine-made.

For clarity, this is a bone and horn veneer product, not ivory. It belongs to De Ferranti’s wider material language of specialist inlay, veneer and decorative surface work, with current project guidance also available where a pale white serpentine alternative may be preferred for new commissions.

Design Use and Specification

Bone Horn Chequer Tiles can be considered for walls, furniture inlays, cabinet fronts, tabletops, doors, decorative panels and selected low-traffic interior floors such as powder rooms, subject to specification. The product may be veneered over Marine Ply or marble, allowing De Ferranti to discuss the correct backing for the intended use, panel size and installation method.

The chequerboard format works particularly well where a project needs rhythm and contrast without a highly figurative pattern. It can bring sharpness to a small room, frame a furniture piece, animate a bar or cabinet front, or create a disciplined black and pale field within a larger decorative interior.
