Pebble Mosaics
Pebbles embedded in the paved floor of the Persepolis Palace 3000BC are recognised as the earliest specimen of mosaic art.

Other exquisite examples of pebble mosaics have been excavated at Olynthos in Northern Greece, dating from the 5th Century BC and a later Macedonian example, in coloured pebbles, depicts Dionysus in a lion hunt. The tradition has carried on right through to the current day, in both figurative and geometric forms.

De Ferranti’s pebble mosaics are made in exactly the same way as 5,000 years ago. Each of the pebbles is hand selected and put into the required arrangement one by one.
